Citizenship got harder, ID cards are going away
Three changes from the last few months that every international in Sweden should know about.
1. Citizenship now takes 8 years
Since 6 June 2026 most applicants need 8 years of residence (was 5), their own income of about 20,850 SEK a month, and proof of Swedish (SFI course D works). It applies to pending applications too. Check your new date →
2. Skatteverket's ID card is being phased out
The government has proposed closing Skatteverket's ID-card service from 1 March 2027. If you need one, apply while you still can. What it means →
3. Expert tax relief: the bar is lower than you think
The salary route is 88,800 SEK a month in 2026 (1.5× the price base amount), not the old 2× figure many sites still quote. You have 3 months from your first day to apply. Check eligibility →
