The areas in detail

Inom Vallgraven & Nordstaden (city centre)

Gothenburg's 17th-century core, inside the moat (Vallgraven) and canals. Here are the main shopping streets (Kungsgatan, Vallgatan, Södra Larmgatan), the market hall, the Nordstan shopping centre, Kronhuset (1654) and the Trädgårdsföreningen park. Few people live here: the City's statistical area Inom Vallgraven, which includes Nordstaden, had only 2,607 dwellings at the end of 2025. 54% of those (excluding special housing) were built before 1931.

Getting around
Walking distance to Göteborg Central (trains) and Nils Ericson Terminalen (Flygbussarna, regional buses). Tram hubs: Brunnsparken (all lines except 8 and 12) and Drottningtorget/Centralstationen (1, 3, 4, 7, 9, 11, 12). Also Kungsportsplatsen (3, 4, 5, 7, 10), Domkyrkan, Grönsakstorget, and Stenpiren (1, 11), where river ferries 285, 286 and 287 leave for Klippan, Lindholmspiren and Lundbystrand.
Housing
Older stone apartment buildings. Of the 2,607 dwellings (2025), 56.7% are bostadsrätt and 43.3% rental, with no houses. SCB's 2026 mean first-hand rent in the Centrum district is SEK 1,766 per m² per year. Qasa's H1 2026 median second-hand rent for a 2-room flat in Centrum is SEK 13,000 a month, the highest in the city.
Good for
Singles, couples and short-stay professionals who want to walk everywhere and can accept city-centre noise, nightlife and high rents. There is little family-sized housing.

Vasastan (Vasastaden)

Stone-built district along the leafy Vasagatan esplanade, which runs from Avenyn and the Röhsska Museum to the School of Business, Economics and Law and Haga. Many of the buildings date from 1870–1920; 64% of dwellings were built before 1931. Known for student life, galleries, cafés and wine bars (Göteborg & Co).

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area in Gothenburg for families?

It depends on whether you want a flat or a house. For flats close to parks and the centre, look at Linnéstaden (Slottsskogen), Majorna-Kungsladugård and Örgryte (Delsjön nature reserve). For houses and space, Torslanda, Askim/Hovås, Mölndal, Partille and Kungsbacka. Check the preschool queue in your area early.

Where do young professionals live in Gothenburg?

Mostly in the inner city: Linnéstaden, Vasastan, Majorna, Lorensberg and the city centre for restaurants and nightlife, and Lindholmen or Eriksberg for people working in the tech district on Hisingen.

Which areas of Gothenburg have the cheapest rents?

In SCB's 2026 rent survey, first-hand rents are lowest in Angered (SEK 1,204 per m² a year), Västra Hisingen (1,401), Västra Göteborg (1,456) and Östra Göteborg, which includes Gamlestaden (1,470). The city average is 1,602. On the sublet market, the lowest 2-room medians were in Västra and Östra Göteborg (about SEK 9,500-9,600 a month).

Is it worth living outside Gothenburg, in Mölndal, Partille or Kungsbacka?

Mölndal and Partille are in the same Västtrafik zone A as Gothenburg, so a normal monthly ticket covers the commute, and both have fast trains. Kungsbacka is in zone B, so you need a two-zone ticket (SEK 1,335 a month at the ordinary price), and healthcare is run by Region Halland. Local tax is lower in Mölndal (31.99%) and Partille (31.36%) than in Göteborg (32.60%).

Where should I live if I work at Lindholmen or Volvo?

For Lindholmen: Lindholmen, Eriksberg, Kvillebäcken or anywhere on tram lines 10 and 12, or near the river ferries. For Volvo Cars in Torslanda: Torslanda itself or areas on the X1, X6 and X77 express buses.
