About Gothenburg Expats
An independent English-language guide for people moving to, living in and running a business in Gothenburg. We turn official Swedish sources into plain answers, with real numbers, dates and the source linked on every page.
Who runs the site
Editor: Miguel Baptista. Miguel is a Portuguese business manager with more than 15 years in international marketing and sales, at companies including Procter & Gamble, L'Oréal and Essity. Having moved to Sweden himself, he started Gothenburg Expats to give newcomers the practical answers he would have wanted: what to do, in which order, how long it takes and what it costs.
The site is published by Fractio AB, a go-to-market consultancy based in Gothenburg, Sweden. Miguel on LinkedIn · miguel@fractio.se
What we publish
- Free tools: a Sweden tax calculator, an expert tax relief calculator, a citizenship clock, a move-in roadmap and a page of current waiting times.
- Guides to the processes newcomers struggle with: the personnummer, the ID card, citizenship, tax, banking and starting a company, plus Gothenburg in numbers and a neighbourhood guide.
- A directory of businesses and public services that help internationals in English.
Editorial policy
Primary sources first
Facts come from the bodies that set the rules or publish the data: Skatteverket, Migrationsverket, Bolagsverket, the Police, SCB, Göteborgs Stad, Västra Götalandsregionen and 1177, Västtrafik, Skolverket and the Riksdag's legal texts. We link the source next to the fact, and we say so when a figure comes from a company or a platform rather than an authority.
Dated and reviewed
Every guide shows when it was last checked. Waiting times are refreshed monthly, tax figures every January, and law changes when they take effect. Proposals that are not yet law are labelled as proposals.
Corrections
If you spot an error, tell us. We check every report, fix confirmed errors as quickly as we can, usually within a few working days, and note significant corrections on the page.
How we use AI
We use AI tools to help research and draft. A human editor decides what is published, and every figure is checked against the official source linked on the page.
Not individual advice
Our pages are general information. For a decision about your own case, contact the authority or a qualified adviser, for example one from our lawyers or accountants pages.
How the directory works
We list businesses and public services that serve internationals in English and have a presence in Gothenburg or clearly serve the city. Each listing is checked against the provider's own website, and we remove listings that close, move away or stop serving English speakers. Basic listings are free and nobody can pay to be included or to change how we describe them.
Featured partners are businesses that pay for a highlighted spot at the top of one category page. They are always labelled "Featured partner", limited to three per category, and their links carry rel="sponsored". Being featured does not change basic listings, guides or tool results, and featured partners must meet the same criteria as everyone else. We can decline any request. How featured listings work.
Independence
Gothenburg Expats is not affiliated with any Swedish authority, municipality or embassy. We don't run ad networks. The site is funded by Fractio AB and by clearly labelled featured listings. If we ever use affiliate links, they will be labelled as such.
